Hong Bin Resort Phu Quoc Island, Vietnam I booked this bungalow-style hotel in the Long Beach area through Agoda because its listing said it provided transfers from guests’ arrival point on the island. I took an eight-hour overnight bus from Saigon to Ha Tien on Vietnam’s southwestern coast, followed by a three-hour ferry to Phu Quoc. While on the ferry, I confirmed with the hotel that someone would pick me up at the pier. As the ferry approached, a different receptionist told me no one was coming. He acknowledged that Agoda advertised the service but said it had been discontinued and that they “can’t” do it anymore. He gave no explanation. He told me to get a Grab taxi myself and said nothing about reimbursing me. When a hotel says it provides transportation from your arrival point, I understand that to mean the ride is actually provided and covered by the hotel. If that’s not the case, they should explain it clearly. I challenged the receptionist in online messages and again at the front desk. He was a strangely haughty, vacuous guy in his early 20s with a ponytail, completely indifferent to my situation and rights as a guest. He seemed to think the hotel breaking its promise was inconsequential. While waiting to check in, I was sitting with my laptop at a table in the eating area. An older man with straight white hair came in, turned off the light, and gave me an evil smirk, as if saying, “I’m the boss here, and I do whatever I want. I don’t give a damn about you guests.” Apparently he works as a cleaner, which would explain why the pool water is dirty brown. The receptionist said that if I sent a screenshot of the hotel’s promise to pick me up, he’d “do something” about my taxi fare. I sent it, but he didn’t compensate me. Trying to speak with the owner or manager was a waste of time. No surprise. In so many cases of really bad service in this part of the world, owners hide and have their lowly underlings cover for them. He also insisted that a promise to provide pickup doesn’t mean the hotel will cover the cost. Maybe that’s true somewhere, but not in any of the 35 countries I’ve visited. In any case, the main problem was that the hotel promised to pick me up at the pier and then stranded me without explanation or remorse. One last example of the staff’s phenomenal unprofessionalism at the Hong Bin “Resort”: there were no umbrellas in the rooms. On my last day, it rained heavily, and there was no way to contact staff for one. There’s no phone in the room, and the reception desk is far from most rooms.

This was the worst hotel experience I had in all my time in Vietnam. My family and I arrived around 12:15 AM, but no staff were there to check us in, only a security guard. I said “Xin chào” and he didn’t even answer. We were traveling with elderly parents, and the route from reception to the room has a steep slope. I had to ask several times before the guard reluctantly helped with just one trolley bag. The room had insects, and even the basic toothpaste was poor quality and didn’t foam at all. The service and basic hospitality were extremely poor. I wouldn’t recommend this place to families, especially those traveling with seniors.

We knew we were booking a budget-friendly stay and trusted the good reviews, but all four bungalows for our family of 10 were infested with ants and mosquitoes. Ants swarmed our luggage and the walls were covered in bugs. Even our transportation driver questioned our choice while taking us along the small roads to the stay, and said it was more than likely not safe. We could have managed the out-of-the-way location, but not the infestation. We packed up and left without a refund. It was worth leaving and paying double somewhere else.

The room was disgusting, and the staff made the whole situation worse. They were rude, unfriendly, and uninterested in helping. Instead, they tried to tell us that this horrible room was exactly what we had booked. That was a lie and showed complete disrespect. We’d booked a Deluxe room with a balcony and garden view, but got something completely different. It was tucked behind the other rooms near the entrance, like a forgotten storage shed, and definitely wasn’t a Deluxe room. There was no balcony, and the “garden view” was just a fence and wall. A dirty, torn, cloudy film covered the window and made the room dark and depressing. The furniture was old and broken. The sheets were stained and moldy, the bathroom had hair left by previous guests, and the toilet was dirty with mold on the seat. The whole room smelled awful, damp, and dirty. The conditions were so disgusting and unsanitary we couldn’t stay. We wasted time, our mood was ruined, and we had to find another hotel in the middle of the night. No one should have to go through that. This place is dirty, dishonest, and absolutely unsafe. Avoid it at all costs.

I wouldn’t stay here again. The air conditioning was broken, and during my 6-day stay it needed maintenance every other day. The pool had serious problems too, and two kids got hurt nearby. Tiles around the pool are broken. They really need to spend money on upkeep.
