Amber Lagoon Backpackers Lodge

We left less than half an hour after checking in. We’d been given a different house from the one we booked, and the alternative room offered to us wasn’t clean or ready. The property details didn’t mention that the showers only had cold water, and there was no private bathroom. It’s very remote and outdoorsy, which I wouldn’t call “glamping.” The location also isn’t great if you’re travelling by car, and the accommodation refused to refund us.

The campsite had lovely shady spots, and the bathrooms and hot showers were really clean. We also cooled off in the pool and enjoyed watching the neighbour’s ostriches and all the birds around the property. Everything feels decorated with care. We had such a lovely time at amber lagoon, especially with those sunsets and the stargazing. Highly recommend a visit!

We stayed in the comfortable tents for a more rustic feel. Between the salt pool among the trees, birdwatching and a break from the desert heat, it was a great place to unwind. Breakfast crepes were awesome, and for dinner we had schnitzel and ostrich ragout with a drink of our choice. Our German hosts were friendly and fun to chat with. One of the most amazing places I’ve visited, and I’d love to come back.

We were driving from Cape Town to Port Edward and hadn’t planned a stop, so we pulled in when we’d gone as far as we could. Susanna greeted us warmly, along with her friendly dog Anna. She made us mince pancakes for supper without any fuss, even though we hadn’t booked. We had a really enjoyable evening. It felt safe and secure, and it’s truly pet friendly.
