The hot water was the one thing that worked well across four visits. I kept coming back after seeing good reviews, hoping the place had improved, but I was fooling myself. Hygiene, comfort, staff conduct and basic respect for guests were all far below an acceptable level, and I can’t recommend this guesthouse without major changes. The last stay was the worst. I was first shown a room that already had someone in it, and staff made that guest leave while I stood there. The room was filthy, the bathroom couldn’t be used, there were strong smells, and the linens looked as if they’d been handled with wet hands. The next room was somewhat better but still dirty, with cobwebs, spiders, marked walls, ripped sheets and moldy pillowcases. It was also missing bedside lamps, enough pillows for a double bed, towels until I asked, soap and a bath mat. There was only one cabinet, and I had to ask repeatedly for a TV remote. Staff were making loud, disturbing noise through the night and only stopped in the morning. Earlier visits were bad too. On the first, the bed was so uncomfortable I woke up in pain, like I’d been run over. On the second, the TV in my first room didn’t work; after I moved, noise from other guests kept disturbing me. The third room was noisy again, and the bathroom sink had mucus in it. I didn’t complain or leave a review then because I thought mistakes could happen.

I’ve stayed here before, but this visit left me feeling like I wasn’t welcome at all. I booked online, yet every time someone new came on shift they came to my room several times to ask my name again. Surely they could see the online booking on their side? It started to feel like harassment. My room also went uncleaned for the whole stay. I left before 10 a.m. on the first day with the room unlocked, then came back a few hours later to find it locked and still not cleaned. The tall man at reception was rude and talked down to me. The staff were very unfriendly this time. It’s bad enough to run a poor place, but making customers feel they shouldn’t be there is something else. They clearly didn’t need my money.

The place was falsely advertised. The kitchen was very dirty, the toilet was broken, and there was no shower curtain. The room was dirty too, especially the linen. Other guests were drunk, very loud and aggressive. We asked Cape Palm Royal for a refund and they refused, so we spent the night in our room and left very early the next morning. Be careful and stay away.

The rooms smelled funny and were dirty. The place is disgusting and untidy, and there’s no parking on site. I wouldn’t recommend anyone stay here.

Wendy was kind enough to let us leave our bags at the property before check-in, which helped since we were flying with kids and arrived early. A month before check-in, our plans changed when we were told renovations were happening and we’d be moved to their sister apartment, Reidhoff Flats. We agreed, and mentioned our concerns about the reviews. They said things were improving and asked for a chance. The first night was disappointing. The sheets were ripped, the pillows stained, and the carpet under the bed was filthy. I doubt it had been vacuumed, and my sinuses gave me a hard time. There was barely any cutlery or cookware, so we had to borrow a wooden spoon to make food for the kids. The toilet paper was one ply, too. We also lost electricity for an hour or more while waiting for someone to come fix it. Then on Sunday morning it went off again, so we had to shower in cold water before catching our 5:55 flight. We came to Cape Town for a relaxing trip with the kids, but the stay wasn’t pleasant. If you’re fine with a stuffy place, broken furniture and peeling TV stands, this might suit you. I wouldn’t recommend it.
