Liberty Lodge

The hosts made us feel right at home, and we loved the homemade breakfast. Liberty Lodge is in a safe-feeling area with great bars and restaurants nearby. Our room was spacious and clean, with a fantastic Table Mountain view, and the whole place felt cozy. We really enjoyed staying here and would happily recommend it.

I’ve booked the lodge for tourists more than once, but after two groups of visitors had unpleasant stays, I wouldn’t send anyone here now. The location is ideal, but the standard feels low and I don’t think the four-star rating is justified. When I raised the problems, the manager’s answer was that guests could drink tap water and get coffee at a nearby café. Breakfast was below minimum, or sometimes unavailable. There was no filter coffee upstairs or at breakfast, no bottled water to drink or buy for the rooms, and the marmalade had run out. The scrambled eggs were just a one-egg portion, with no yogurt, fruit, cheese, or extras. There were room issues too. One safe had no code, and the manager didn’t get back to us to help my guest. A guest room had barred windows and a balcony door without a handle, so there was no way to get fresh air, and we hadn’t been told about that. The outdoor loungers were nearly falling apart, not even fit for a towel. The place seems to be having serious financial problems and shouldn’t be taking tourists in this condition.

Lisa and Thandi were the highlight of our stay. They’re such lovely hosts and made the whole visit fantastic. The place was spotless and tidy, and we felt really comfortable. The location is perfect too. We understand the owner has just changed, and hope the staff stay on so Liberty Lodge keeps its welcoming feel.

Coming back at night to a very clean place, a king-size bed, and everything we needed was great. We were right in the middle of city life, with Table Mountain behind us, Signal Hill and Lions Head alongside, and the harbour ahead. Driving around the Kloof neck gave us incredible views. What an experience!
