We brought guests from Atlanta, Georgia, to Caamil’s Bar at The Bay Hotel to give them a taste of Cape Town hospitality, and the welcome really stood out. Caamil was polished, attentive and warm. The tables were beautifully set for the Coast to Country experience, and our service chocolate Labrador, Shadow, was welcomed with a plush bed, blanket, and bowls of food and fresh water beside us. We hadn’t asked for any of it, which made the thoughtfulness all the more touching. We started with the Fynbos Mint Gin Cocktail as the Camps Bay sunset turned gold over the Atlantic. It was fresh and aromatic, with local botanicals. At Caamil’s we had braaibroodtjies and sizzling boerewors, then moved to Tides Restaurant, looking out over palm trees and the ocean. The braai chefs cooked the Coast to Country meal on the Tides grill beautifully. The sides included charred buttered corn on the cob, butter lettuce with pine nuts and parmesan, and fire-baked sweet potato with honey and Maldon salt. Then came crisp Karoo lamb rib chops with traditional braai salt and Babylonstoren Babel, West Coast crayfish tail with garlic butter and Groote Post Seasalter Sauvignon Blanc, and rare Chalmar beef fillet medallions with smoked rosemary and peppercorn sauce. The lamb was crisp, the fillet tender, and the crayfish sweet and succulent. Two lively salads with unexpected touches rounded things out. Dessert was Peppermint Crisp Tart with peppermint cream, chocolate and biscuit crumble, followed by “Kondensmelk-koffie” and warm, syrup-soaked koeksisters. We ended back at Caamil’s for a nightcap. It felt world-class while still being rooted in South Africa, and would be a lovely way for locals to rediscover Cape Town or for international guests to experience the country.

Terence, the Food & Beverage Manager, was the one real bright spot apart from the excellent location, spacious room and beautiful views. He went out of his way to make my birthday special, and breakfast and the restaurant were excellent thanks to his care and professionalism. The waiters we met were also attentive and very good. If there were more managers like Terence, the experience would be completely different; the hotel should consider making him Hotel Manager. The rest of our stay was extremely disappointing, especially as we were celebrating my birthday. Reception gave us a poor, unprofessional welcome. The staff member seemed disengaged, with no energy or sense of hospitality, and it set a bad tone from the start. Our rooms were very dirty, the carpets looked neglected and badly fitted, and several electrical plugs stopped working. Housekeeping and maintenance standards weren’t being met. The hotel felt tired, poorly managed and short on attention to detail. Service was consistently below standard, and it seemed to me that management was behind these problems. For such a beautiful location, the lack of professionalism was striking. Despite the setting, poor service, cleanliness and management mean I’d never stay here again or recommend it.

This hotel feels like home to me, and I really like it. The pools, paddle and sunsets are all great. I’d recommend it, especially with a sea view. The main downside for me was that the bed was very uncomfortable.

Such a good place to slow down and take in the area, with lovely views as you walk around the headland. There’s plenty to see and do, including great bars and interesting shops. It makes for a quieter break from Cape Town while still giving you lots of options.

A treat-yourself kind of place, and I’d definitely return. The pools are delightful, the layout is really cool, and there are lots of amenities. The spa is wonderful, staff are friendly, and breakfast is excellent. It’s right on the beach, with waves you can hear at night from a beach-side room. The luxurious rooms aren’t too expensive. I love that it’s away from the main city but still nearby, on the other side of Table Mountain.
