I had to scramble for somewhere else to stay at the last minute, with little hope of finding anything nice on short notice. The owner eventually told me she couldn’t honor my booking because the hotel was being renovated, though I only found out after calling her twice. She’d promised to return my first call but never did. This was a birthday surprise for my partner, and we’d been looking forward to it for a long time. I’d booked many months earlier, then had to extend the booking because of lockdown and confirmed my election of 26 september. Two weeks ago, I called just to check everything was still set, but there was no follow-up. It’s very disappointing. If I hadn’t called, there was a good chance we would have arrived on the 26th and been met with a nasty surprise.

It has a relaxed, make-yourself-at-home feel, with lovely staff, and it’s close to the main road and the sea. It’s probably better for quieter groups than families with children, since kids can easily be heard by other guests. Checkout is at 11 o'clock, and the place isn’t wheelchair friendly.

The ground-floor room beside the entrance hallway got quite noisy, since the tiled floors have no carpets to soften the sound. The room itself was spacious and tastefully decorated, with lovely views over Kalkbay harbour, and the staff were friendly and efficient. There are quaint shops and lovely restaurants just a stone's throw away. A visit to Kalkies Restaurant at the harbour is a must, a former restaurant for local fishermen. You can sit inside or outside at communal tables for fish and chips or calamari, and might catch sight of seals swimming in the harbour.

Suzette went out of her way to find a high chair for my 8 month old and was so accommodating of our little family. She made our stay really comfortable, and we had a great time. Thank you for everything, Suzette!

A lovely gem of a guesthouse, beautifully restored, with a spacious room and a warm welcome at reception. The upper deck has great ocean views. Loved it.
