We really enjoyed the breakfast, with both traditional and Western choices. We stayed in the Mona Lisa suite for our last night in South Africa. It’s in a historic castle, and the room felt romantic, with an outdoor terrace and a huge private roof deck where we could stargaze. Check-in was friendly and efficient, and we got welcome drinks. The grounds were gorgeous, and parking was free on site. Shops and restaurants in Clarens were about a 10-15 minute walk away. There’s no pool or spa on site, though. At the stated 10 a.m. checkout time, nobody was at the front desk because staff were in meetings, which felt very odd. I also appreciated the hotel asking guests to be mindful of water use, but found it strange they still provided mini plastic bottles when many hotels we stayed at in SA had switched to large refillable dispensers.

The food was delicious and nicely prepared, and the rooms were clean and well maintained. It’s a peaceful place with good hospitality and service all the way from the guard to reception and the restaurant. Definitely good value for money.

We ate at Limoncella, the restaurant at Il Castello Hotel in Clarens, and it’s a real gem. Chef Jeanette cooked the steak and chips and chicken schnitzel perfectly. The prices are great, and the place could be somewhere in Italy or Europe. It’s a beautiful hotel and restaurant, a little outside the main town, with really friendly, capable staff. When you’re in Clarens, it’s well worth visiting. Next time we’ll stay in the rooms too, so we can have the full experience. Can’t wait! Regards, Renée

We had to ask just to get service for a drink, after a greeting that felt unfriendly. It’s far from the Square, so it doesn’t work for us. We wouldn’t visit again or stay there.

The restaurant had tasty food, and I’d recommend the oxtail. The staff there were very good and friendly, and there were lots of breakfast options to choose from. We stayed at the hotel too, where the room was beautiful and very clean. The staff were friendly, and we enjoyed drinks on the terrace with a gorgeous view. I’d stay again.
