The room key failed twice, leaving us locked out once on arrival and again during the stay, and reception had to reset it both times. We also found a small roach each day, and there was a urine smell we couldn’t locate at first. Ventilating the room didn’t fix it, even after we asked for it to be checked and turned down. We eventually found the smell was coming from the desk chair. It was taken away after we reported it, but no replacement arrived. There were plenty of breakfast choices and the food was good, though at our first breakfast the fruit and yogurt were uncovered and unattended, with flies around them. Probably best to get there early. The family room is a good option with kids, with two double beds and a handy mini-kitchen, bar fridge, sink, and cupboard space. The bathroom is roomy, with a separate shower and tub we liked, but the basin is far too shallow to use comfortably. I liked the bar, children’s play area, and family spaces. Staff welcomed us warmly and were friendly and responsive. The hotel is fair for the price, even in peak season.

We ate at the restaurant during the festive season. Our waiter was friendly, but the meal and the overall experience were disappointing, with flies bothering us while we ate. The hotel used to have a great reputation, though its standards seem to have slipped lately. I’d suggest the owners look at pest control, regular cleaning, and building renovations to attract higher calibre customers.

There’s a lovely laid-back entertainment area and a spa, and the views take in both the ocean and river. The staff are friendly and always around to help. You can book a breakfast pack instead of eating early; it’s packed with care and works well to save for lunch. I’ll definitely stay again.

The staff were kind and helpful throughout, and I really enjoyed the stay. The room and hotel were nice, and breakfast was top notch. They hosted our Western Province masters hockey team and celebrated WP Chargers winning Durban Inter Provincials 2026. The hospitality was excellent.

Manny Govender was a real highlight for us at Riverside Hotel. He runs the restaurant tightly but with such style and finesse, and made everyone feel welcome with his humble, polite manner. He checked that we were happy with both the food and service, and his warmth and easygoing charisma made it a pleasure to talk with him. I travel all over South Africa and have plenty to compare it with, and I don’t usually connect with people so quickly. It was an honor to meet him, and Riverside Hotel did well to bring him onto the team. We stayed in December 2025 and had a wonderful time. From the moment we arrived, the reception staff were friendly and helpful, and check-in was simple. They explained the extras and specials available. The porters were patient and attentive, and we never needed to ask for anything. Restaurant staff were just as attentive, checking in and serving us without us having to seek anyone out. The breakfast menu had a huge range of dishes, and everything we tried was tasty. It sets a very high bar for other restaurants. We can’t wait to go back!
