Jennifer, the housekeeper, was so kind and helpful. Whenever we needed anything, early or late, she was there. Dennis the owner was also friendly and considerate, and went out of his way to help me. Pastel Guesthouse feels warm and homely, with simple decor and cute antique furniture. It was clean, quiet and quaint, with pretty views of the city lights at night. It's also close to major attractions and restaurants.

The rooms are spacious, with en suite bathrooms, and the kitchen has what you need to cook a few meals. Jennifer, who looks after the place, is a real blessing and makes sure you're comfortable. It's at a secure dead end and has great views over the city. Restaurants, shops and all the lovely things to do in Durban are close by.

The one thing I loved was how quiet it was. The rooms, though, were old and dirty, and I had to ask for the sheets to be changed because they were filthy from the day I slept there. The kitchen was tiny, like a wardrobe, and nothing like what I was shown before booking.

We spent six weeks in the house while I did an internship in Durban, and really enjoyed our stay. The patio was lovely for afternoons and evenings, with good weather and a view over Durban. Dennis was a lovely host, easy to communicate with and helpful with advice about the area and things to do. The neighbourhood felt safe, with a police station next door, and Musgrave Centre is within walking distance for shopping. Our rooms were clean and well kept, the beds very comfortable, and they were cleaned every day. Laundry service was available too.
