The dinners were a lovely surprise. Since I’m vegan and avoid quite a lot of foods, I appreciated how much effort Moye Guest House put into making me vegan meals. I got to try several dishes I hadn’t had before, and they were all really tasty. I had a good stay and will definitely return when I’m back in Joburg.

I called to ask if a room was available, but I can't even have my kids stay in my room because they only allow two people per room.

The staff were friendly and the place was good, so I’d still recommend staying here. A few things were frustrating, though. I chose a room with a bath, then was told not to use it because the room price had been reduced. I also never received the Wi-Fi password they said they’d send to my WhatsApp. They didn’t see my payment until after they asked me about it, even though I’d emailed the proof of payment. At night I had to wait a long time for someone to open the door. They could use extra keys.

There was no door separating the bathroom from the bedroom, so there wasn't much privacy. The owner also charged us R500 extra, which we felt was unfair. We let it go because we wanted to keep the peace. She doesn't seem to understand how to run a B&B, especially for people with fast lives like us.

We left after the second day and couldn't stay for the third night. When we tried to check out, the manager wasn't around and seemed to be avoiding guests. The staff had to run around looking for a key so we could get our refund. There was no spare toilet paper, and the bathroom light had no bulb. The basin was so small and budget that I had to fill the kettle cup by cup. Calling every problem a “budget” issue doesn't make the standards acceptable. They feel stuck in 1995, even though basic expectations have moved on. Looking at the earlier complaints, the manager seems to have a “good” excuse for poor service, poor quality or misleading advertising. I used to own a guesthouse, and the “budget” room standard here was shocking. The room was advertised as 60m², but even giving it the benefit of the doubt, I’d say it was at most 25m². The ad said queen bed, but it was an ordinary double. The mattress was the worst I’ve ever slept on, with springs digging into my back. There was no mattress cover, and the fitted sheet was for a single or ¾ bed and didn’t fit properly. On the first night there was only one bedside table. A second appeared the next day, after apparently being lent to another room. There were no bedside lamps like the ones in the photo. The room was scorching hot, with just one window and no fan. The view faced the backyard, where tools hung on a garden fence and an unattended roof was visible. The room, ceiling and cupboard badly needed painting. The curtains were 50cm too long, and their tie backs had no hooks on the wall. The kettle was on the floor. There was no shampoo, bar of soap, fridge, hangers or hairdryer. No mirror above the basin for shaving either, so he had to walk to the opposite wall. There was no cupboard key for locking away belongings, or a safe. Only two TV channels worked, soccer and some horrible monster-like rubbish, plus a blank channel. On the second day, I had to go looking for my coffee and tea because they’d been taken from the room. The manager or owner was simply rude, blunt and unfazed.
