The reason for the five stars is really the kindness we were shown when things went wrong. On our way home, only about 10 km out of George, our car broke down on an uphill stretch of Outeniqua Pass. We were stranded and nobody stopped to help. I called the owner, Mr John, and he quickly connected us with a mechanic. While the car was being repaired, our valuables were inside it and we had nowhere to stay. Mr John picked us up from the mechanic and took us to his other guest house so we could rest and recover, even though we hadn't paid to stay there that day. His accommodation was fully booked, but he held a two-sleeper cottage for us at the usual two-person price, while making special arrangements so it could sleep six. We could decide whether to risk driving at night or stay once the car was fixed and leave the next day. I don't think we could ever repay him. He was a godsend, and we'll always be grateful. The apartment itself was neat and cosy. We booked the six-sleeper, which worked perfectly for our family outing. Mr John and his employees gave us excellent service. I would definitely recommend the place.

Anelda was such a lovely lady, and the service was great. There’s plenty of space here, a really nice place to get away from home for a break. I’ll definitely come back. Thank you!

I’m sad to have to write this, but what we saw online didn’t match what we got during Easter weekend. In the “two bed cottage,” there was just one bedroom, with two single beds in the lounge. There were lots of ants on the kitchen counter, and the gas hob knobs were broken. We were shown how to use the hob without them. The shower was another problem. We had to be instructed how to get hot water from the gas system, and I burned my scalp on water that was scalding hot. The bedroom window looked straight out onto washing on the line in the house courtyard. The bathroom window opened onto the laundry, so no fresh air came in, and the tumble dryer was so noisy we couldn’t rest. I’m usually easygoing, but I wouldn’t recommend this place to anyone. What a disappointment.

When I left around 9 pm, I opened the gate and waited inside for my cab. The caretaker told me to stand out on the street because he wanted to close the gate. With the risk of killings and kidnappings in our country, that felt deeply unsafe. The caretaker is very rude and harasses guests. I’ll never recommend this place.

The shower was blocked, and the place was very dusty.
