When I was about 10, my parents stayed on a farm at Sandkraal. I used to ride my bicycle down there to fish, and saw a few cars that couldn't make it back up the hill. In those days the road was gravel, with cement only on the cuttings, and it was very dangerous. It was a good fishing spot on the right side for Roman and crakers, gallies.

I came fishing and caught my first Galjoen. The scenery and views are exceptional, and this is the safest fishing spot I’ve ever visited. Climbing out to the furthest tip is an adventure, but definitely not for the faint-hearted. What an experience!

Ballots Bay has a secluded beach and a beautiful little river, all set in peaceful surroundings. The sands are pristine and the water crystal-clear. It’s a hidden gem with breathtaking views, a lovely place to unwind, explore the calm water, or just take in the natural beauty away from the bustle.

We had a fantastic stay at 21 Beach Road, Ballots Bay. The cottage is perched on stilts, with a hot tub facing an incredible valley view, and the whole area was pristine. Inside, the spacious house was well equipped, right down to a pizza oven. There are a few short walks nearby and quick access to the beach, with breathtaking views. We’re definitely coming back to this beautiful little secret tucked between the mountains.

We went fishing and hiked along the rocks up the right cliff, then walked up the river to the small waterfalls. The house is high up the mountain, private, clean, comfortable and very well equipped, with nobody bothering you. It’s a magnificent part of South Africa, relaxing but still close enough to town if you need anything. A wonderful way to start a honeymoon!
