The location is convenient and the food is decent, but I can’t see how this place justifies rates above €1,000 a night. Hermanus is wonderful, yet this property didn’t feel like value for money. Grootbos and The Marine seem to offer a much more balanced, comfortable stay. This is a small guesthouse or converted residential building with 11 rooms and very little infrastructure, rather than a traditional hotel. Anyone expecting a luxury coastal hotel will likely be disappointed: there are just two tiny plunge pools, one dining area, no range of restaurants or bars, no full spa, and few of the other facilities expected at this price. Comfort was the main problem. The rooms are small and awkwardly laid out, with poor functionality despite the stylish design. Privacy is very limited, since guests can be seen from neighboring rooms and even the parking area. Street noise comes through clearly, soundproofing is almost nonexistent, and light slips in all night through large gaps in the blinds. We couldn’t sleep comfortably. When we brought these concerns to management, the response felt dismissive and unprofessional. They offered no real fix and suggested leaving early without a refund.

The food was fresh, local, and delicious, with plenty to choose from at every meal. I’d go for full board unless you’re planning to eat in town. The views are incredible, and the decor and rooms are beautiful. We couldn’t find a single thing to complain about during our short stay in Hermanus. It’s a peaceful place to get away from the bustle of Cape Town, and I hope we can visit again soon.

Birkenhead House gave us one of the most luxurious, comfortable stays we’ve had. The service made it especially memorable: every staff member was kind, attentive, and welcoming, and we felt genuinely looked after. The property is stunning and distinctive, with incredible views over Walker Bay. Every meal was delicious too. We can’t recommend it enough.
