We stayed in the Hippo House, where huge hippos lounge in the river just meters from the back deck. It's charming, and you really feel alive out in the South African bush. The location is magical, and the hosts and staff took such good care of us.

💥💥💥💥 We lived there for a few months in '78, and I still have good memories of the old HIPPO POOLS. There was a small airstrip for the owner, and I sometimes helped out with little jobs. I offered to drive the tractor and mow with the slasher, and plough water run-off ditches alongside the runway. Somehow I ended up ploughing straight across it, and I wasn't very popular after that! We had a stilt cottage, and one morning, when we opened the door to leave for school, there were two lions on the porch. We used to ride hippos at the river Bridge, not understanding the danger. There were no cellphones then, just CBs and two-way radios. Ours were in the Landcruiser, parked five meters away. 💥💥💥💥

The pool is nice, but the place hasn't been maintained well. The children's play area is really unsafe.

It was disappointing. The place doesn't really offer what the photos suggest, and I don't think it's worth the rates. The putt-putt course was unusable and completely neglected.
