The staff made us feel welcome and looked after throughout our five days at Thornybush. The guides and trackers were knowledgeable and warm, and the service at the lodge was excellent. The reserve offered a great mix of comfort and adventure. We went on two game drives each day, and every outing brought remarkable sightings. We watched a pride of lions, elephants in their natural habitat, and even a leopard on the prowl. The range of wildlife and the landscapes made each drive feel different. My wife and I were there with two other couples, and the trip was a safari experience we’ll never forget. We’re already planning to return with our two children so they can experience it too. For wildlife and hospitality, we can’t recommend Thornybush highly enough.

We’ll be back. Thornybush did a very good job, and the whole team made our stay feel impeccable. The library stood out for its decor and special feel, with books to read or a good internet connection for browsing. Nyalas grazed just a few metres away for much of the day, sometimes only a metre from us as we walked to the pool or dining area, and seemed to ignore us. The rooms were luxurious villas, with very wide beds, indoor and outdoor showers, and terraces overlooking the river or bush. It felt like pure luxury without being pretentious. Attention to detail was everywhere, from the bean to cup machine to rooms being cleaned several times a day. The staff were attentive at every point, from arrival to meals, and were ready to help or fetch something from the bedroom or library. The food was excellent, with a la carte and buffet options, fresh local produce, meat, fish, fruit, and desserts. Breakfast was especially good, with buffet and a la carte choices like shakshuka, eggs, and porridge. We didn’t try the spa, but there’s a sauna and massage available. For wildlife, the guides and spotters were professionals. They studied animal tracks on the paths and patiently followed them, sometimes bringing us within a few metres of lions, rhinos, leopards, and more. Guides also shared sightings and tips over the radio. We had Kaden / very nice and vast knowledge) and John for three days, and they were outstanding. We can’t thank them enough. If you want to see the big five and more, this is the place.

The main issue for us was the condition of a few areas in the rooms, which need maintenance, especially for a lodge in the ultra-luxury five-star category. Some doors didn’t shut or seal properly, leaving small gaps around the bathroom, outdoor shower, and main entrance. At night, with lights on, insects such as mosquitoes could get in. Even with that drawback, we had a fantastic three-night family stay in March 2025 at Thorny Bush Lodge in Timbavati, South Africa. The meals were outstanding, the game viewing was exceptional, and the service was warm and attentive. The safari guides and experience arrangers were knowledgeable and engaging, while management and staff were experienced, professional, and welcoming. Everything ran smoothly, and we’d definitely return. I’d highly recommend it for an authentic, luxurious safari.

Our game drives were a highlight, with guide Freddy and driver Enock sharing their deep knowledge of the wildlife and ecosystem, along with their passion for conservation. They went out of their way to help us see lions, elephants, and more, and taught us so much along the way. The stay at Thornybush Game Lodge was unforgettable. The friendly, warm staff took care of every need, and the service was impeccable. The food was delicious throughout, especially the special bush dinner under the stars. We also loved the luxurious rooms, lovely pool, and peaceful surroundings that made us feel close to nature. It’s a wonderful balance of luxury and adventure, and we highly recommend it.

The guide and tracker team, Freedom and Delta, brought the bush to life with their knowledge and passion. Thinking back on their work and the experience they gave us still brings a tear to my eye. The in-house staff took care of every want and need with a smile and quick attention. Reinas, who looked after us at each meal, deserves a gold medal for his service and wisdom. We celebrated our first wedding anniversary during our three incredible nights at Thornybush. On the final evening, the team arranged a special dinner location and a room setup for us, and we were truly touched by the effort. The food, hospitality, spa, decor, attention to detail, and game viewing were all impeccable. I grew up around the luxury game industry, so I feel confident saying Thornybush delivers on its five-star promise. It has a very special place in our hearts, and I highly recommend it to anyone wanting to experience the South African bush at its best.
