54 On Bath

We stopped for an overnight stay at 54 on Bath in Johannesburg on the way to Kruger National Park, and the attentive service made the experience seamless. The porter staff were prompt and courteous, and dinner at the hotel restaurant was a highlight, with gourmet food and impeccable service. We also enjoyed evening cocktails at the Hendrick’s Gin Bar on the 4th floor, a calm spot with stylish decor and a serene feel. The hotel is elegant, beautifully maintained, and has a refined atmosphere. Our spotless, thoughtfully arranged room had a lovely pool view. It’s in the upscale suburb of Rosebank, with convenient access to shops in the attached mall. We were advised that walking around on the street may not be ideal for Western tourists, though the area felt clean and well kept. I’d highly recommend it for comfort, sophistication, and attentive hospitality in Johannesburg.

The building sits in the heart of JHB and has been modernized since it was originally built. The rooms are struggling to meet modern standards, though, and seem to have adapted as best they can. The staff help where they can, but there are no smiles, and the atmosphere feels tense and cold. The food didn’t make me want to come back for it.

I had a great birthday stay, with a lovely ambiance and amazing breakfast. Room service was quite slow, though. I’d recommend it to couples celebrating a special occasion, and I’ll be back.

We loved staying here and always felt safe. The rooms and decor are charming, the breakfast is fabulous, and the service is outstanding. Having a connection to the mall was a nice extra.
