The rooms were clean, though dimly lit, and the passageway was dim too. There was an empty beer glass there, and the hotel had a strong detergent smell that wasn't pleasant. Outside our window, rowdy drunk people were talking loudly in the street below. The area didn't seem nice or safe, and we felt unsafe, so we checked out immediately. My sister and I had booked a room for two at the Ascot. At check-in, the man at reception still asked if anyone else would be joining us. When I asked about parking in the basement, he said, "No. You will need a man to drive the car in" because the driveway was steep and difficult, and he couldn't drive in there himself. I was shocked and asked why. It was upsetting and unacceptable for him to assume I couldn't handle a difficult parking space because I'm a woman. He then showed us to the room. In the elevator he apologized for his appearance, saying he'd "had a party and it was a rough night," which was inappropriate and unnecessary. After opening the room, he came inside and again asked if someone else would be joining us. We felt very uneasy. We were helped by a different, much nicer man at checkout. Maybe things would have gone differently if he'd helped us from the start.
There are plenty of food options in the same block, including pizza hut, Steers, a well-stocked Spar, and a Woolies food. The staff are friendly when you run into them, and having a bar fridge in the room is a big plus. The location suits me, a little outside JHB's busiest areas, and the price is very affordable. The hotel needs attention, though. There was no TV, the safe didn't work, and we went without water for 18 hours. Staff didn't try to arrange a solution, such as 5 liter bottles or another alternative. It's also very noisy from 5 am, when people at the gym upstairs drop weights and play loud doef-doef music to motivate themselves. From the look of them, it doesn't help.
A perfect boutique hotel for a high-end, low-key stay that feels exclusive and stays under the mainstream radar 😊🔥😉
The staff were friendly and helpful, and the hotel was clean and decent in what seemed to be a neighborhood. I appreciated that there were no bugs, but the rooms could use an upgrade. There also wasn't much space or many plugs for electronics. The attached bar and restaurant plays music until midnight, so skip it if you go to bed early. The shower was uncomfortably close to the wall while bathing. Load balancing also affected some nights, with the electricity going off.
I checked out the same evening, telling the front desk I had a family emergency because I didn't feel like explaining how unhappy I was. I've stayed in many hotels in South Africa, including much better 1 and 2 star places. This is the worst 4 star hotel I've been to, and should be downgraded to 1 or 2 stars. The room had no spoons for making tea or coffee, the coffee sachets were the cheapest kind, and there were no bath towels. There was an extremely unpleasant loud drilling noise. I was told there's a factory nearby, so it seems to be a long-term problem. The parking was a nightmare, and I didn't feel safe leaving my car on the road. The balcony door was old and very hard to close. There was also a lot of traffic noise, even though I was apparently on the quieter side of the hotel. Management should train staff to double-check rooms before check-in. The next day, a staff member called saying they'd noticed two towels missing, implying I'd taken them. When their number came up on my phone, I thought they were checking on my stay. Instead, they accused me of taking towels that weren't in the room in the first place.
