African Rock Hotel & Spa, a "Boutique Lifestyle Resort"

We used this as an overnight stop before heading to our next destination the following day. The gated property has security, so it felt safe, and the accommodation is beautifully designed with a great ambience, though some distance from OR Tambo and the busier city areas. Our rooms were comfortable, well furnished, and looked great in photos. Heated bathroom floors were especially nice in winter. The hot water tank couldn't fill the bathtub, so we ran out before we could soak. A hot shower was fine instead. Service was generally great: when we ran out of hot water, the manager let us use a shower in an empty adjoining room. On checkout day, though, nobody told us when our transfer had arrived, and we had to carry our luggage to the vehicle ourselves. It was a relaxing stay, and the food was great too. I'd recommend booking half board.

The staff were friendly, and that was the only good part for me. The room was small, ugly, and had filthy carpets. I was afraid to use the cups. The price was far too high for a small room in this suburban area, even Sandton Sun is cheaper. The pictures made the room look big and beautiful, and Google Maps showed 3.5k, so I should have asked to see it and declined. I'm absolutely unhappy with what I paid, and won't come back.

We only stayed one night at ARH in July, but the staff took such good care of our family. We got caught in a travel nightmare on our way from the States to Johannesburg, and they welcomed us at the last minute. They even helped arrange a quick shopping trip when our baggage went missing, so we could get warm safari clothes. It was a wonderful welcome to South Africa. The quiet, safe neighborhood made it easy to relax, and everything at ARH felt comforting. We were pampered with delicious dinner and breakfast, very comfortable rooms, and a delightful bathtub. The boutique shop is a lovely little place with lots of memorabilia options. I've got to go back for more. We'll happily return on our next stopover and hopefully stay longer to enjoy the place properly.

The pool was awesome, and the resort is close to the airport. The reception and restaurant stay at just the right temperature, warm when it's chilly and cool when it's hot. The design is elegant and classy. The staff are a real highlight: friendly, warm, sincere, well trained, and well spoken. Special thanks to Primrose and Alistair, and the chef too. We had a wonderful, if short, stay. It felt like a home away from home. Highly recommended. 🤩🙏🏻
