There are photographs throughout the hotel showing major events connected with its history in the region, and wandering the corridors is well worthwhile. They include soldiers leaving for war in the 1800s, the English royal family staying there in the 1900s, and countless other pictures. We were lucky enough to dine at the colony restaurant. The food was fantastic and very well priced, and with local wines it was a real treat. Breakfast was super tasty too, with great coffee and super friendly service. The hotel is charming, the staff are warm, and it may be the warmest place on the cape. This jewel in the crown of the Karoo made for an exceptional stay. I can’t wait to return in summer and try the beautiful pool.

We stayed in the two-bedroom apartment, which had everything you’d need for a comfortable visit. The rooms were neat and clean, and breakfast was nice with a good variety. Staff were amazing from check-in through check-out. The TV has basic channels, but it’s a smart TV that can log into Netflix, YouTube and similar services.

Breakfast was a long wait, with one staff member trying to handle everything. Most dishes were nearly empty, and there was no cold meat, coffee, or warm milk. We had to wait for each thing. We’d booked two rooms for my family. In the double room, the bed hadn’t been made and looked like someone had slept in it; the room was untidy. The other room had two beds but only one towel, and nobody apologised even though it was booked for two people. How was a room assigned without checking it was ready? I wouldn’t recommend this stay. It wasn’t worth the “4 star” rating at all, and was one of my worst experiences.

The restaurant food was a highlight, especially the ostrich steak, the best I’ve ever had. The staff were friendly and helpful, and our room was clean and comfortable. There’s also a little shop next door with lovely ostrich keepsakes at very reasonable prices. My family and I had an amazing stay at the Queens Hotel in Oudtshoorn. I’ll definitely book there again.

The king-size bed in our room was incredibly comfortable, and the breakfast staff were friendly, welcoming and helpful. Thanks for that! The only hassle was the shower door seals. They need replacing soon, as water flooded the bathroom and a few towels had to be brought in to soak it up for safety. We hadn’t planned the trip, we came to support a friend running the Cango Caves Marathon in Oudtshoorn. Luckily the hotel could fit us in for one night. I’d book again if the price drops.
