House B was freezing in the middle of winter, so bring extra blankets or a heater that can warm a large room. The electric blankets on the beds and six thin lap blankets helped, but the little fan heater was broken. Hot water was nice, though the pressure was lower than I’m used to. The gas stove and oven worked, but there were no matches or lighter, and the candles provided were no help for the same reason. WiFi was available for less than 24 hours, and the municipality’s unofficial loadshedding in Parys would have been useful to know about ahead of time. There are some good basics: a fridge, a large freezer that smelled like mayonnaise, microwave, cutlery, plates, bowls, glasses, and cups. The Hisense smart TV has Netflix and YouTube, though previous guests were still signed in to their accounts. The couch can be rearranged to make one extra sleeping spot. The light switches are pull strings on the ceiling. There are washing lines, but I didn’t see a washing machine, even though laundry was hanging on other lines. Getting there took a bit of finding because the entrance is through a partly hidden passage, but that also made it feel less exposed to burglars from the street. Parking was chaotic. Our spaces were taken, and two very unskilled bakkie drivers used four of the five spots on that strip. It’s especially hard to maneuver a bakkie there. There’s a gate to the dedicated parking area, but wait two seconds after it opens fully before driving through, as it jumps back and could hit or startle your vehicle. A small grass yard and a braai stand for each house are nice, and there’s a back door into the parking space if it hasn’t been taken. For the price and a short stay, it’s a suitable option.
