The Blades

We had a lovely anniversary weekend at The Blades, just over an hour from JHB, so it made for an easy nearby escape. It was quiet when we visited, with only a few people at the pool. The grounds were clean, the staff welcomed us warmly, and reception was pleasant. The spa was AMAZING, and we had the best massage. Breakfast was filling, and the restaurant staff were accommodating. It’s a nice place to relax, read, and listen to the birds and nature. They seem to have good social offers too, so call directly to check.

DO NOT RECOMMEND We didn’t stay at the hotel or use its facilities. We booked a place at The Blades Christmas Buffet for a once in a lifetime Christmas outing, and chose it based on the reviews. The welcome cocktail was complimentary, and the setting and table arrangements were lovely. But the meal was a huge disappointment for R700 per head. Several advertised dishes were missing. The starter felt cheaply thrown together, and the Osso Buco was just basic shin, dry, overcooked, and burnt tasting. The Coronation Chicken looked good but was bland. The honey glazed Gammon with apple sauce was good, but there were no butternut fritters. The rice was stodgy, though the potatoes were nice. Dessert for that price was just one option of strawberry ice cream, bland sticky toffee pudding, and what was supposed to be chocolate cheesecake with blueberry and white sauce, but tasted like a processed premade cube. Whoever put the catering together made the menu sound great and then badly underdelivered. It wasn’t a good Christmas experience, and I wouldn’t recommend it for a family outing.

The view of the dam and surrounding nature was breathtaking, and it made the meal feel like an escape. Every dish was delicious, carefully prepared, and full of flavor. Our waiter Witness was attentive without hovering, knew the menu well, and made us feel welcome as soon as we arrived. He also suggested some great places to enjoy the view after eating. The Blades is a real gem, and I can’t wait to return.

Mkhululi made our dinner extra special with excellent service when we celebrated my wife’s birthday at The Blades Hotel. The setting was beautiful and the food delicious. We’ll definitely be back.
