A peaceful hideaway in an upmarket area, with a friendly owner/manager.

The staff were friendly and accommodating, and I had a wonderful stay at the hideout.

The manager was kind and tried to help, but the situation was beyond his control. There were bunk beds that weren’t shown on the website, and I couldn’t climb up. The entrance was too narrow, and I barely got through while some others couldn’t fit at all. The guests were all female pensioners, some with limited mobility, which made the arrangement misleading. This would probably suit young people and backpackers better.

I had an email saying I could arrive between 4 and 5pm, but at 4 nobody was there to check me in. The gardener said the owner had gone to a meeting. I returned at 4:45pm and still found nobody, and calls went to voicemail. What a pathetic owner. I ended up at Town Lodge, which was just as well, since Fairland Hideout looked way too run down.

The Fairlands Hideout felt like a home away from home: clean, safe, secure, and respectful of privacy. The host is a breath of fresh air, and his vision should help this hidden gem keep evolving.
