The Maisonette Guest Lodge

George was especially helpful, and some of the other staff were great as well. The property has a lovely garden with bird feeders and plenty of birds, plus a nice pool. It has a lot going for it, but we wouldn’t stay again unless things improve. The welcome was awkward from the start. The intercom at the gate didn’t work, so we had to call a number posted there to get in. Those numbers were taken down a few days later, which may explain all the hooting we heard from people outside trying to enter. Once inside, nobody met us at the parking area, so we had to find reception ourselves. Cheryl, the manager, didn’t seem to know about our reservation until we showed the Agoda proof. She then asked how we’d pay. We explained we’d already paid Agoda and that Agoda would pay them, and she sorted it out, but it still didn’t feel welcoming. We also felt nickle and dimed by the supplies. At first the only coffee was cheap Ricoffy in a Nescafe jar, the milk was unpleasant long-life milk, and there was no real butter. Other things, including the food and toilet paper, seemed to be the cheapest available. They tried to provide better coffee when we asked, but it was still instant and came with long-life milk. I’d rather pay a couple of hundred rand more per night and not feel like everything is the cheapest option. The gate and guard caused a security concern when the gate failed and the guard wasn’t there. Both times, it was fixed fairly quickly. I hope they make a few improvements and reach the place’s potential. With some changes, it could probably get a 4-star rating on Tripadvisor. We’d like to see it do better.

The bathrooms weren’t as clean as I’d expect. The self-catering units also had no plates or cutlery, and the Wi-Fi was poor whenever there was a signal. It wasn’t available in every room either.
