The Robertson Small Hotel

The place is beautiful and the swim-up suite itself was lovely, but the pool noise and breakfast service would put us off booking one of those rooms again. Swimmers were doing loud lengths right outside our room, and there were no signs asking people to avoid swimming between certain hours, such as 7 pm and 8:30 am. Breakfast took 45 minutes for an omelette even though only one other couple was there, and toast meant waiting about half an hour. The buffet also kept running out of food, and basic serving utensils like jam spoons weren't set out. Management needs to get these things sorted.

Our dusty car got a lovely wash in the morning, an incredible extra touch. From arrival to departure, everyone treated us with such warmth, and check-in was ready to go. We were welcomed with a non-alcoholic cocktail. The room surprised us in the best way, with a terrace straight onto the pool, a comfortable king-size bed, a clean bathroom, and really cosy bathrobes. Dinner at the hotel restaurant was delicious, the service was great, and the filet steak was so good. We couldn't have asked for anything more. This place feels like an oasis in the middle of Robertson. Thanks for all the hospitality.

Waking up at 7 am to chairs being moved in the dining room was one of the two little quirks, since our room was right next to it. The staff also chatted loudly among themselves, which wasn't acceptable. Still, room 3 was clean and comfortable, and the patio was a lovely spot to sit in the garden with a sundowner. The Margaritas were great, and they washed our car when we left, a refreshing surprise. Very nostalgic. Richard and Joanne

The dining room felt rather institutional, with too many tables squeezed into a small space. We'd warned The Small Restaurant ahead of time that I can't have gluten, but the kitchen clearly hadn't taken note. The menu was short, just two uncooked starters, duck, beef or trout for mains, and two sponge-and-ice-cream desserts, yet service dragged. The food that came out was bland and/or overcooked, and only lukewarm. The so-called 'tiramisu' with peppermint and salted caramel was honestly indigestible. Going out on Valentine's Day feels like tempting fate, so maybe our mediocre meal shouldn't have surprised us.
