Bonne Esperance Boutique Guest House

Breakfast was delicious, well cooked, and enjoyable. If I were rating the restaurant on that alone, I’d have left happy. But the cake painting activity completely spoiled the visit. The cake we got, as shown in the picture, was so dry and crumbly it was inedible. It seemed old and stale, and no amount of icing could save it. This was meant to be an experience, but the poor cake quality took all the fun out of it. It felt careless, as if nobody had made sure the cake was fresh or suitable for painting and eating. The manager on duty wasn’t helpful at all. At 145 per person, getting a cake like that just isn’t worth it. I’d come back for breakfast, but I wouldn’t recommend or repeat the cake painting experience unless they fix the quality.

The breakfast was yummy, the staff lovely, and the location great. We had the basic room, which was a bit poky and could use a fresh coat of paint and some new carpet. The building itself was lovely.

Bonne Esperance is in a very secure spot in the centre of Stellenbosch, within walking distance of everything, and Ubers are easy to get. The property is beautifully restored, with nice rooms and a large, modern bathroom with a huge tub. Breakfasts are great and the morning staff are very nice. There isn’t really a front desk service, though there are staff around if you need anything. Be sure to book restaurants ahead.

I accidentally booked the biggest room, and it was really nice and comfortable. The BnB was easy to reach in the heart of wine land, clean, and had great service. Having a guard on duty from 7pm to 7am helped me feel safe. I’d stay here again on my next trip back.
