San Gabriel Historic Guest Cottages

Dear Renier, Shané and family, you created a paradise for people young and old, and we’re so grateful you shared it with us. We truly hope to return to South Africa one day, and when we do, you’ll be right at the top of our list. Twelve out of ten stars, without a doubt! We’ve never felt so welcome and at home in a place to stay. You’re natural hosts, and your passion for your homestead is contagious. The thoughtfully designed rooms, wonderful pizza night, delicious breakfast, and the way you treat your guests all blew us away.

Renier and his wife are fantastic, enthusiastic hosts, and their work on this old historic mansion is wonderful. You can feel and touch the history of the place. It’s a real hidden gem, with breathtaking accommodation and a huge, delicious breakfast. One of the best places I’ve ever stayed. I’d recommend it as a base for visiting the Cape Winelands. It’s in a strategic position, and staying here feels like being in a real heaven.

We won’t be returning. The rooms had a farmstead design but felt outdated and too rustic for the price. There was very little privacy, and the host came across as rude and passive-aggressive. We appreciated that the room was cleaned, but there was no notice beforehand, which left us uncomfortable because we would have wanted to secure our valuables. Breakfast times followed the host’s preference rather than the guests’, and we couldn’t choose a meal, the host decided what was served. We also found it unusual to eat breakfast communally with the other guests.

We had a really unique experience here. You can interact with the donkeys, milk the goat, and feed the chickens. Breakfast was amazing too, if you choose to opt in 😊 Thanks for having us!
