Sterland is fantastic for stargazing! It’s a brilliant spot near restaurants and activities, and the little place is nice and cozy. Nothing fancy, but it has everything needed for self-catering. Unfortunately, the big SALT telescope place closes for the festive season every two years, and I managed to arrive at just the wrong time.

Marita was so friendly and welcoming, and the Wi-Fi connection was superb. The rooms are simple but have historical charm. A fantastic stay, highly recommended, and I’ll definitely stay again.

A very friendly and helpful lady welcomed us, but the rooms fell far short. They’re extremely basic, the seating is uncomfortable, and the lighting was very poor once the electricity came back. In such a cold place, the cement floors could really use more rugs and carpets. There was no backup during the power failure, and the fire smoked us out. By 9 am, when we left, there was no water, apparently because the pipes had frozen. I lived in Dullstroom for years, and we solved that by insulating the water pipes. It all left me feeling like no care goes into this place. As for location, Sutherland is so small that pretty much anywhere is central.

The rooms are good, and the bed and bedding were very comfortable. My main concern is the showers, which really need an upgrade.

We only spent one night at Die Heks se Huis, which was a pity, because it was a lovely experience. The house was spacious and had all the amenities we needed, with more besides. It’s a great getaway if you want peace and quiet and to enjoy Sutherland’s lovely star-filled night sky. I’ll be sure to return.
