Augusta de Mist Country House

We found this little paradise on an overnight stop on the way to our vacation, then booked two more nights for the return trip. Renate, the manager, is a dynamic host with a very talented team. The apartments are thoughtfully decorated and comfortable, and the meals were original and beautifully presented. The welcome and service were honestly the best we’ve ever had. We’d highly recommend it.

The cottages sit among plants in a beautifully kept green park, and each one feels like a small museum with new details everywhere you look. The staff were exceptionally friendly and attentive. Dinner was seven courses, and every one left us speechless. The cook put so much care into it, and the small wine list was unusual and well chosen. Between courses, the owner shared stories about the place and the staff, along with a few food preparation secrets. We loved every minute and didn’t want dinner to end. Breakfast carried the magic on. It was easily the best we’ve had in South Africa so far, with warm homemade bread, cheeses, homemade jam, local treats, muffins, granola, and more. The omelettes were delicious, and the flapjacks were to die for. Everything about our stay was perfect, and it became one of our holiday highlights. If you’re in Swellendam, I’d recommend going, even if it wasn’t on your list before.

There are several lovely places to stay, from the main house to the cottages, all in historic buildings. Each unit has its own eclectic art and character, and the accommodation feels luxurious. The decor is tasteful throughout. Food is a highlight, especially the generous breakfasts and seven-course dinners.

I called while in Swellendam on Garden Route travel agency business to ask about booking the restaurant. The person who answered was very rude and cut me off. I called again, and he shouted at me and denied hanging up. I was not impressed by that attitude.
