The staff were friendly, and I understand the resort may be renovated soon with upgraded facilities. Still, I honestly don't think it's worth what you pay. The resort itself is nice, but the old furniture and dated finishes need attention. We booked a six-sleeper, yet beds were provided for only four people. The sleeper couch was worn, heavy, and really only usable by kids. There were no plug points at all in the one-bedroom unit, and the shower was very small. The air conditioning was only in the lounge and kitchen, while the bedrooms had ceiling fans, despite the resort being advertised as air-conditioned. In one unit, the aircon leaked indoors. When we reported it, we were told to keep all the doors shut and it would stop. We had to argue with management before someone came to fix it. Towels were another hassle. We were told fresh towels would cost a 200 levy because they are changed only every two days. Beach and pool towels were promised, but whenever we went to reception they had none. We had to argue with management that this was unacceptable before it was sorted out.

The place was neat and clean inside, but the building needs maintenance. Rain kept dripping onto the stoep, so we had to keep moving the table around to avoid it. The fridge drawers wouldn't stay in place and fell out when we put things in them. They'd tried a temporary glass fix, but it didn't work. The flat is listed for six, but the couch only fits two kids and shouldn't count as a bed. The kitchen plugs were unreliable too: touching one made the other switch off. We also had to wash a few things ourselves because the previous guests hadn't cleaned them properly. The shared Jacuzzi water often smelled like urine while we were there. Online photos and the place in person looked very different. Parking is first come, first served. Each unit should have an assigned spot so you know where to park and can be sure of covered parking.

We were lucky to get one of the newly renovated units. It was modern, comfortable, and a real pleasure to stay in. The only issue was towels: when we asked housekeeping for fresh ones, they said they wouldn't change them until the end of our stay. I wish we'd been told that from the start.

Even a one out of five is too generous. Do not book at Umhlanga Cabanas. It's the worst place to stay on Lagoon Drive, and the BEEKMAN Group is just as bad. They advertise a lot, but when you arrive, none of it is included in your stay. Pool rules say no glass bottles, yet I saw people drinking in the Jacuzzi and around the pool, with no security in sight. Towels are never available, and they keep saying people haven't returned them. No other resort or hotel gives such a dumb excuse. I reported a torn couch and an aircon leaking from check-in three days ago, and nothing has been done. They claim to offer the best prices and beat any advertised rate, but Agoda had the same booking for 1000 rand and more cheaper. Disgusted!

We had a really enjoyable stay. It was tidy and clean, and the bathrooms had body wash and hand wash, which was great. There were things to do for adults and kids, and the beach is an easy walk away. xx
