Garden Court Umhlanga

This was my second stay, and everything was as expected. The team were especially helpful when I realized I’d left my laptop in the room while rushing to visit a family member in hospital. I called about six hours after checkout, and they confirmed they had it and helped get it back to me. Thanks to the housekeeping team!

The reception staff were quite friendly, but that was about the only warm welcome. The other staff didn’t really greet us, and restaurant service was poor. Our waiter on Friday night just left without saying anything. The Stormers and their entourage were staying there, but that shouldn’t mean other patrons get neglected. Breakfast was absolutely terrible and flavorless. The omelet had big chunks of pepper, and the sausages had no flavor. The rooms were a bit dated too. Restaurant drinks were severely overpriced for the location, R80 for a single JW Black or R40 for a single Tanqueray gin. That’s a 500% profit on JW whiskey. Come on, Southern Sun, be a bit realistic. On the plus side, the pools are heated, which is good depending on the weather. It’s within walking distance of Gateway, though a few kilometres from Umhlanga beach, and there’s free underground parking.

Ameera and Phumlani went above and beyond to make sure we were accommodated and could enjoy the dining facilities. I’ve returned over the years because of service like theirs. Thank you both for the exceptional care.

The breakfast spread was a big plus, and the staff hosting it were so pleasant. The venue is ideally located near shopping malls and the beach, with customer service that really stands out. One snag: even though the pool is heated, the pool area closes at 20:00, so the kids have no recreation there after that.
