I've visited every Protea hotel in South Africa, and Umhlanga Fire & Ice is the best one I've been to. We arrived Friday and left Tuesday morning as a family of four, with our two-year-old toddler, so travelling was a bit harder. Every staff member we dealt with, from the security guard and porter to reception, food and beverage, and housekeeping, was knowledgeable and well trained. The facility is in tip-top shape, but the people are what make this place so easy to love. My heart is full. Managers, you've picked a wonderful team. Please keep doing whatever you're doing. Thanks to everyone, including Dima, Mbali, Nikiwe, Vuyo, Nobuhle, Nolwazi, Lungile, and Isaac. Those are the names I can remember, but I'm grateful to all the staff.

The room was clean and comfortable, and housekeeping did a decent job over my three-night stay at Protea Hotel Fire & Ice! by Marriott. It's a stylish hotel in a great location, but the warmth and hospitality that make a stay memorable were missing. I'd give the experience 6/10. Next time I'll probably go back to my previous hotels in the area, though I hope management improves guest attention, check-in, and staff engagement. With a bit more care, this place could live up to its name and reputation. A close friend had recommended it highly. I'd stayed at a few nearby hotels and expected this one to be similar or better, but the experience was mixed from the start. No one welcomed or helped with my luggage, so I carried it to reception while the security guard watched. Check-in took an unusually long time, and I was told someone would escort me to my room and bring my key in about 30 minutes. I also had to ask twice for a room change to get a better view before it was arranged. After that, I hoped they might offer a small gesture like complimentary breakfast, since I was alone for three nights. I asked, and staff said they'd check with the manager, but the next morning I was told it wasn't possible. That disappointed me, especially as a Genius Level 3 (Gold) member who usually gets a more welcoming approach at other hotels.

Being close to Gateway made it easy to shop and get Ubers, and the hotel stayed pretty quiet at night. The breakfast was tasty and nicely laid out, and the room had everything I needed and felt comfortable. Staff were upbeat and welcoming throughout, and I appreciated the Bonvoy upgrade. Looking forward to coming back.

The gym is small, but for a hotel gym it was one of the better ones I've used. Staff were friendly from reception through housekeeping, and the food was first class. It's pricier than some nearby places, but I felt I got my money's worth. Cleanliness, service, and value were all there.

The people serving our table, including THA, were such a great group of young staff. Everyone I dealt with was helpful, respectful, friendly, and well mannered. Management seems to have things running really well, and the service stood out in a way I haven't experienced in SA for a long time. I'll definitely be back 😄
