After the long drive from Pretoria, we reached the hotel around 9pm. I’d told the staff days earlier that we’d be arriving after an exhausting eight hours on the road. I’d booked an executive room and a deluxe room because we had a lot of luggage, and at reception I checked carefully which key belonged to which room. We still ended up with two identical rooms. The reception phone option didn’t work, so I had to call from my mobile. By then it was nearly 10pm, and a different staff member was helping because the woman we’d spoken to was on “lunch.” He said the booking showed matching rooms, but I had the confirmation email on my phone and the previous receptionist had confirmed the different room types. He moved us to a two-bedroom apartment, which was a kind gesture. Even there, the bathrooms weren’t in great condition, and the road noise from cars speeding back and forth kept us awake. Breakfast was disappointing too. Some items labelled “halaal” apparently no longer are. When we stayed in September 2025, we had a lovely breakfast and spoke with an Indian male chef named Clive, if I’m remembering correctly. There are fewer choices now, and the cakes and muffins were so sweet we couldn’t even finish half a muffin. For an upmarket hotel, the standards have fallen a lot. We won’t stay here again.
The kids’ Easter activities were thoughtfully done, my daughter loved them, and the pool and other shared facilities were spotless. The rooms were modern and comfortable for a family, with a kitchenette and washing machine that came in handy with a young child. Breakfast was also very good, with plenty on the buffet, a live egg station, and attentive, professional waitstaff. Our main frustrations were with the service and food information. Housekeeping was inconsistent, and repeated requests to improve the cleaning went nowhere until I raised it in person at reception. There were three of us, including my wife and our 21-month-old daughter, but we kept getting only two towels. Neither housekeeping nor the front desk sorted it out until I escalated the issue, so for much of the stay we had to share. That’s not acceptable at this level. The hotel described the food as “halal-friendly” at check-in, but staff in the dining area gave conflicting explanations, which made us uncomfortable. We stuck with vegetarian food. Halal choices also seemed to vary from day to day, and I saw utensils being used between pork and non-pork items at the egg station. The hotel needs clearer practices around this. We were also asked to pay a daily deposit for pool towels and lounge beds. It was refunded each day, but felt out of place for a premium beach resort. The accommodation and family amenities are strong, though those inconsistent basics took away from the stay.
The location made it easy to leave the car parked: the hotel opens onto the streets of Umhlanga, with restaurants, bars, shops and other amenities all within walking distance, from early morning into late evening. The dining area is spacious, with outdoor tables and seating on the pool deck overlooking the Indian Ocean, and the hotel food was great. We were back at The Capital Pearls for our seventh anniversary and spent a few nights in Umhlanga. This time our room was in the recently expanded wing. It’s a little walk from the main reception, but not a tiring one, and we felt it was worth it. The room was modern, had everything we needed, and looked out over the Indian Ocean and nearby hotels. It also had its own entrance. Parking was easy to access, the porters were friendly and helpful, and the staff answered our questions warmly. Check-in was quick. The air conditioning worked well, the queen bed was very comfortable, and the smart TV had all the main streaming apps, which we need. We’ll definitely come back.
The birthday touches made this stay really special. The team arranged the flowers and decorations with so much care, and the personal details helped make my girlfriend’s birthday unforgettable. Our room was beautiful too, with a stunning ocean view. We had an amazing stay at The Capital Pearls.
I never quite worked out the front-loader washing machine, which was the only little snag in an otherwise fantastic four days. The room stayed perfectly clean thanks to housekeeping, and breakfast was fresh and yummy each morning. Everyone was lovely, especially the front-of-house team, who were always smiling and friendly.
