What bothered me most was the uneven upkeep during our stay. We booked two rooms: one was cleaned the next morning, though the 250ml milk bottle we’d used wasn’t replaced, and the other wasn’t serviced at all, so we had to make the bed and wash our coffee mugs ourselves. Both rooms were clean on arrival, and coffee, tea and milk were included. One room had air conditioning, the other only a ceiling fan, which made the hot, humid night really uncomfortable. At check-in, the manager at Pomodoro didn’t make us feel welcome. I’d booked based on the website saying breakfast was included in the room price, but was told that wasn’t true and that they’d ask their IT people to correct the site. The town-centre location is cute, but noisy, and not ideal if you want peace and nature. For the same price, there were plenty of other places to choose from.

We stumbled on this place while travelling from Cape Town to Bathurst and were glad we did. The room had a roomy queen bed and a balcony. It wasn’t fancy, just spotlessly clean and comfortable. There’s also a fabulous Italian restaurant downstairs that the locals love.

The meal was excellent. There weren’t many people there, perhaps because of rugby, though the inconsistent booking policy may also have played a part. If people stop coming, bookings will become irrelevant anyway.

Pomodoro, the pizza place attached to it, is really popular. The staff are great and the pizzas are too.

You get very good value here, and the rooms are cleaned daily. It’s a comfortable, friendly place for a couple or someone travelling alone. There’s a kettle and fridge in the room, but no cooking. That’s not much of a problem with four top-class restaurants less than a minute away, including Pomodoro right downstairs. Spar is just as close if you’d rather buy food, and breakfast is served downstairs at Pomodoro. Wilderness is a beautiful base for exploring the Garden Route. For the accommodation and location, this is almost certainly the best value around.
