The pool became one of my favorite places to spend time, and Basil and George were so thoughtful and attentive whenever we were there. Leaving was honestly sad. Ilala Lodge had started to feel like much more than somewhere to sleep and eat, thanks to how friendly and on top of things everyone was. I really hope I get to return. Our first impression was just as warm. Jane at reception did everything she could to make us comfortable from the moment we arrived, and I’m so grateful for her care. Dinner was delicious, with attentive service and calming piano music. The people at the next table seemed to be having a great time too. Afterwards we stopped for a drink at the pool bar and met Basil, who we later found out had worked there for 30 years. He was kind and funny, and clearly a valued mentor to the team. After the long trip, we booked massages for the next day. The room was small but nicely equipped, and the two women who worked on the knots in our bodies were very skilled. I wish I’d remembered their names. The hotel concierge arranged our Victoria Falls tour and a lovely dinner cruise. We also spent time relaxing by the pool during our stay.

I discussed things with the hotel and viewed the property, but decided not to stay. The price seemed high for what was offered, especially compared with nearby places. Victoria Falls is expensive in general, largely because of the tax paid to the central government. As a world traveller and former Zimbabwean who compares options before booking, I felt the hotel's ownership and staff didn't deliver the level of service its prices call for. Against the competition, three stars is about right.

The rooms are lovely, and the staff are helpful and always smiling. The hotel is close to the souvenir markets, where you should expect approaches from people eager to make sales. They were smiling too, and I felt safe the whole time.

Everything was easy to reach on foot from the hotel, and I'd happily stay here again. My room was spacious, clean, and felt new. The pool and grounds are kept beautifully, and the restaurant served tasty food at a pretty good price. The Wi-Fi was fine for video calls. It's one of the better hotels I've stayed at in Africa.

Wildlife wandering through the grounds was a real treat, from bush bucks and warthogs to baboons and even the occasional elephant. The place is right beside Victoria Falls, where you can see the “smoke” and hear the “thunder.” The grounds are tidy, the rooms are comfortable, and the poolside bar and restaurant are great. There’s a pianist in the evenings, and the staff were welcoming, friendly, and attentive. Highly recommended.
