The wildlife we saw at Matetsi was wonderful, and Simba and Knowledge made the five game drives as enjoyable as the animals themselves. We got close views of elephants and a male lion, but felt safe the whole time. The reserve has no fences, so animals roam freely. It also employs rangers to protect them from poaching around the Zambia border, where it remains an ongoing problem. The rooms were spacious and comfortable, right beside the Zambezi River, with magnificent views across it. The welcome from the whole team was warm and sincere, and I liked that staff used our first names, which made things feel informal. Meals were good rather than outstanding, though I enjoyed the breakfast burrito every morning. DNA Wild, our South African travel planner, coordinated my three-night stay and the travel arrangements, and the whole experience was outstanding. My fellow travelers and I went on to an expedition cruise, and we all agreed nothing would come close to Matetsi.

I have visited Matetsi several times and can't wait to return. Its setting on the Zambezi, with all the wildlife and nature around, feels magical. The property brings elegance together with an authentic feel, and the service and attention to detail are exceptional. The team makes special moments with thoughtful surprises and personalized experiences. Every meal is beautifully presented and full of flavor, like something worthy of a Michelin star. Sundowners looking over the valley are breathtaking, and for an adventure there is a heliport for aerial views of Victoria Falls, as well as an airstrip. There's an incredible variety of wildlife here.

The river cruises and game drives really delivered, with a fabulous crew on the drives. The lodge itself is stunning, beautifully designed and set in a magical spot beside the Zambezi River. The people working there were warm and lovely, supporting us throughout our stay. We'll definitely be back!

Sunrise and sunset cruises on the river were a great way to try to spot wildlife at local watering holes. The guides and tours were great, too. We felt right at home in the spacious, unbelievably well designed rooms, and the staff were phenomenal. The food was fantastic. It was an incredible experience at Matetsi.
