The smell in the guest rooms was hard to ignore. The lobby and hallways seemed fine, but every room we went into had a strong body odor, almost like armpits. I’m surprised more reviews haven’t mentioned it. The staff did try to sort things out. They let us switch rooms and even upgraded us to a suite, but the same smell was there in three more rooms we checked. It seemed like it might be a wider issue, perhaps with the HVAC or ventilation, rather than one particular room. After two nights it still lingered, even with the AC on. The unit was old and loud, and we eventually couldn’t take it anymore and moved to another hotel. There were other problems too: small red stains on both the comforter and sheets, a broken safe, dated furniture, and thin walls that let us hear the neighbours. We booked because we’d had an amazing stay at the Meliá in Thailand. This visit was a real letdown. At this price, there are more modern hotels with a better experience.
I put hotels into three personal categories: places I could live in, places I’d return to, and places I’d avoid. Meliá Recoleta Plaza lands in the middle. I might stay again if Recoleta worked best for my plans, but it didn’t leave much of an impression. The suite was spacious, quiet, clean, and comfortable, with classic period-style furniture, a good bed, and the usual basics for a 5-star hotel. The shower area itself was roomy and easy to move around in, but the water pressure was so weak that even washing my hair was frustrating. At this price, that’s a disappointing flaw in a daily routine. The rooftop pool, gym, and spa were listed amenities, though I didn’t use them much. Staff were consistently polite, efficient, and helpful, from check-in through housekeeping and concierge. Breakfast was another good part of the stay: a generous buffet with fresh choices, good coffee, pastries, fruit, and hot dishes. Nothing groundbreaking, but dependable and enjoyable each morning. The location is central in Recoleta, near Plaza Francia, Recoleta Cemetery, Patio Bullrich, and lots of upscale cafés and restaurants. It’s elegant and easy to explore on foot, and the area feels safe. I personally prefer Palermo for its energy, green spaces, and variety, or Puerto Madero for its modern feel and views. Recoleta can seem more formal and touristy by comparison. The hotel is well run and delivers what it promises, but there’s no standout design, food beyond breakfast, view, or special touch that makes me eager to return. With the weak shower dragging things down, it’s a reasonable base if central Recoleta, good service, and breakfast suit you. If you want more character or a livelier area, especially Palermo, other Buenos Aires options may be a better fit for similar or better value. I’d probably return if Recoleta was the priority and the price worked, provided I could put up with that shower.
We were in Buenos Aires between flights, waiting to meet our tour group, so we only stayed one night. The staff were attentive throughout. We had a light dinner in the bistro, which was more than enough, and breakfast was very good. The wait staff were polite and helpful when we asked about the buffet choices. The atmosphere really felt like a scene from Casablanca. The pianist at breakfast played requests from a list of three pages and was very good. My only complaint was the tiny shower: water got onto the floor because the door wouldn’t close properly. It wasn’t a major bathroom problem, but it could use some maintenance. A good stay for our first visit.
A charming, traditional hotel that’s well connected to taxis and within an easy walk of attractions and nearby restaurants. The minibar and drinks area was good, and the location is accessible. My room was nice, though noise from other rooms came through more than it should have. The curtains also wouldn’t close all the way, an unnecessary inconvenience. Housekeeping did a great job, and the toiletries and towels were good and plentiful. It works well for business stays. Breakfast had decent choices, with a pianist playing softly in the background and taking requests from a song list. Most of the breakfast staff were excellent. I recommend it.
The restaurant connected to the hotel, where they serve the included breakfast, deserves five stars for its food, service, and atmosphere. The jazz club downstairs does too. Melia Recoleta Plaza itself is a lovely boutique hotel in a great spot, with well-equipped rooms and friendly, helpful staff.
