La Merced del Alto

The views are what make this hotel a gem. Be sure to catch sunset from the rooftop tower. The grounds have so much potential, the common areas are cozy, and the restaurant is lovely, with a fireplace. We only learned about the rooftop, lounge, and cellar during dinner, when our wonderful waitress told us. At check-in, no one explained anything about the hotel, and we were told we should have booked dinner ahead. Yet when we called weeks earlier, we were told a reservation wasn't needed. We were one of just two parties at dinner, so it clearly wasn't necessary. Dinner was delicious, but breakfast fell short: cold coffee, no plates, and some empty dishes. When we asked for more media lunas, they brought three and said that was all that remained. The room was nothing special, with paper-thin walls. We heard the people next door at 5 am waiting for sunrise. Our old towels had holes, there were no tissues, and just one roll of toilet paper. We couldn't control the temperature, and when it got cold they had to turn on the heat for everyone. The rooms and service don't live up to those views.

The spacious rooms are designed so they don't need AC. The building has a spectacular setting and is made to look like an old monastery, with gorgeous craft art throughout. Dinner was good, maybe a bit too much food, and breakfast was delicious.

One of the best stays we've had. The grounds are stunning, and the service was phenomenal. Breakfast was delicious, and the spotless, charming rooms have a local touch. The landscaping is beautiful. Five stars all around.

The location and views are hard to beat, and it's only a 5 minute drive into Cachi. We hardly needed to leave, though, because the hotel food was so good. The bar was lovely, and we had the finest Pisco Sour. The communal areas are beautifully decorated and feel luxurious. A completely charming hotel, with five star hospitality and incredibly friendly staff who really made our stay.
