We’d avoid this hostel. We booked a private room for two for two nights at the end of January 2026 through Booking.com, months ahead, when the listed price was €69 with breakfast. About a week before arrival, the hostel messaged us on WhatsApp to say the price had been listed incorrectly and should be 240 USD for the two nights. They also said we could either move to a shared room or pay the higher amount. We contacted Booking.com. They tried to resolve it with the host, but the hostel didn’t respond to them. Then we got a notice that the host wanted to cancel because we hadn’t paid in advance, which made no sense given what they’d told us on WhatsApp. Booking.com advised us to get back in touch if there was a problem at check-in. We were worried, so we went to reception around 10.00 that morning to check whether the reservation was still valid. The morning staff said it was fine, took our bags, and told us to return at 14.00. When we came back, a different shift told us the booking had been cancelled. They were rude and didn’t help us contact Booking.com or find another solution. The cancellation still wasn’t showing on our side of the Booking.com app. As instructed, we called Booking.com’s help desk and explained everything again. The hostel didn’t answer their calls either. While Booking.com was trying to reach the host, the receptionist came out and asked us to cancel from our end, which would leave them not responsible for the cancellation. We politely declined and said we’d follow the information from Booking.com. Booking.com eventually cancelled the reservation, offered alternatives, and promised to cover the price difference. If you’ve booked through Booking.com and get a WhatsApp message about a price increase, and you have the time and energy to deal with it, I suggest not agreeing to the higher price. Don’t cancel yourself or accept a cancellation on your end if the listed price was wrong and the mistake wasn’t obvious when you booked. From other comments I’ve read, this price change seems to happen now and then. It felt like a way to get guests to pay more when cheaper places may already be taken, especially with the message arriving only a week before a January high-season stay in small El Chalten. Maybe it was just a bad coincidence, though. Decide for yourself. We’d recommend avoiding this hostel while you still can.

I booked through Agoda and was supposed to pay at the hostel. The host quoted $103 instead of the $88 I’d booked for, then added a 10% fee for paying by credit card. The USD was converted to Argentine pesos at 1460, which made no sense to me compared with the bank rate. I booked four nights but ended up paying for five. I don’t recommend this hostel.

The owner greeted us with a beer after our hike, and the staff were friendly. They serve fresh bread for breakfast, and with dulce de leche it’s hard to beat. I was there in December 2024 and hope to return to beautiful Patagonia. Really recommend this hostel.

The rooms are cozy and the Wi-Fi works well. The owner and volunteers seemed kind and helpful, but we felt the owner was very focused on keeping costs down, especially at about 70 USD per person per night for our four-bed private room. Breakfast was very limited: two tiny slices of bread, one coffee, and one apple or pear per person. They said the limit was because their delicious homemade bread was scarce, though a nearby bakery sells cheap sourdough that’s even better. We also had to ask for soap and were told we could buy it, since it wasn’t free. Each day we had to ask again for toilet paper, and even with four of us staying several days, they only gave us one roll at a time. It was the thinnest, cheapest kind. Half the towels were stained and already quite old. Warm water, or sometimes the water altogether, would stop for a few minutes now and then, possibly because the tank was too small, so we had to shower quickly. We know it’s one of the cheaper hostels in el Chalten, but for hundreds of dollars over a few days, we expected soap, decent toilet paper, clean towels, and enough breakfast, especially with such a minimal spread. If they weren’t so focused on these small expenses, guests would feel more welcome and we could happily give it five stars.

The owner was so nice. After my third night, he moved me to a nicer room because it was available. It’s a bit expensive, but that’s El Chalten for you. Best hostel ever.
