The stove was almost impossible to use: even though you could light it with a lighter, the flame went out as soon as you let go of the ignition button, so you'd have to hold it down the whole time. I can't recommend this hotel for a comfortable stay in Ushuaia. On our first day, the hair dryer was broken and smelled of burning smoke when I switched it on. It was frightening. I reported it and was told a replacement would come the next day, but that didn't help with my soaking wet hair that night, so I went to bed without drying it. The following day I got back around 4:00 PM and my key card wouldn't open the room. Staff said they'd unlock it remotely and asked me to wait, but the door stayed shut. When I contacted them again, they said someone would bring a key. That took about 30 minutes. Being unable to enter your own room is incredibly inconvenient, and nobody even apologized. When I tried to explain how frustrated I was, they ignored me and asked what time I planned to check out instead.

We liked this Airbnb-style place, with a kitchen and a complimentary bottle of wine. We arranged for the taxi to stop at Alto Andino Hotel, behind La Vela on a slightly higher street, so we could leave our luggage around noon and come back after 3:00 to check in. That way, it was easy to walk down with our bags instead of uphill. The location is actually very convenient, with easy access to the Ushuaia port for taking the ship to see penguins, and to the main streets, where you can send postcards to friends and family from this southernmost city in the world.

The apartment was spacious and good value. The tricky part was check-in: it’s at their sister hotel around the corner, and hauling large suitcases over Ushuaia’s rough pavements made that a pain. Even on a weeknight, the bar opposite played loud music into the early morning.
