My wife, who doesn’t fish, had a great time hiking, horseback riding, and getting a massage while I was on the water. The guides were excellent teachers, and even grilled lunch for us by the stream. Fishing options include lakes that are not to be missed, floating down the river, and fishing the evening hatch right in front of the lodge. The food was excellent, and the staff were attentive and helpful. From our room we could see Andes peaks in Argentina and Chile, as well as a glacier. Rio Manso is a beautiful lodge in an amazing setting. We split our week between El Atravesado and Rio Manso, which share an owner, and I’d definitely consider doing that. I highly recommend using their travel consultants to arrange the trip between Buenos Aires and the lodge. They monitored our flights and caught and fixed a change that would have delayed our return before we even knew there was a problem.

The remote setting was what drew me to El Atravesato, with nine miles of private river access and a lagoon full of healthy trout waiting for a fly. The rivers, lakes, and natural surroundings were wonderfully unspoiled, and the guides were friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful. I loved being among the first guests, and the first female guest, to stay and fish there. The welcoming staff, warm lodge, and chef’s daily delicious meals all made the experience feel just as I’d hoped. Wow, what more could you ask for? If you’re after an off-the-beaten-path fly fishing destination, this really is a heavenly must-do.

Back at the lodge, the meals were a highlight: Argentine flavors alongside fine cuisine, grilled meats, salads, homemade desserts, and an impressive selection of Malbec and other wines. I still remember the tres leches cake. Lunch by the river was freshly prepared asado, and the staff made dinner feel warm and special, with stories around the stone fireplace and hors d'oeuvres. The rooms had panoramic views, and the sauna and massages were welcome ways to unwind after fishing. The guides knew the waters inside out, spoke fluent English, and helped anglers of every level with boat positioning, hatches, and techniques. The fishing was among the best I’ve experienced, across the Rio Manso, spring creeks, and lakes such as Lago Fonck. There were wild rainbow, brown, and brook trout, often in the 2- to 10-pound range. With low fishing pressure and catch-and-release, each cast felt promising, and sight fishing in clear water was thrilling. I arrived at this secluded spot in Nahuel Huapi National Park near Lago Hess, with Monte Tronador in the distance, and was struck by the ancient forests, glacial rivers, and untouched lakes. It feels far from everything, though Bariloche is surprisingly accessible. Rio Manso Lodge brings comfortable elegance together with the Patagonian wilderness. For world-class trout fishing in a beautiful place, I highly recommend it. 5/5 stars.

I left wanting to come back soon, thanks in part to the special camaraderie among the guests and guides. The staff and guides worked hard to make sure every need was met, and the lakeside lunches and meals back at the lodge were all delicious. The fishing and scenery felt dreamlike. It’s hard to believe a place like Rio Manso Lodge exists. Thank you for everything!
