Kersten and Guido are what make Pension Hinterseer so welcoming. They’re relaxed hosts who can suggest restaurants and help with dinner reservations, which can be tricky on Sundays and Mondays when many places close. The Hinterseer family has a strong competitive skiing history, reflected in the trophies, medals, and old photos around the pension. There are fancier hotels, but this is hard to beat for a warm ski-in/ski-out stay in Kitzbühel. The fireplace in the shared area is great for an après-ski drink with other guests, and the hosts usually leave wood ready to light. There’s also a big patio overlooking the gondola and valley, two saunas, and plenty of free parking. Breakfast is very nice, with eggs made to order each morning. The town center is about a 10 minute walk, though the uphill walk back is a bit steep. The location is just up the hill from the Hahnenkammbahn gondola. From the ski storage and boot-drying room, you can head out to the backyard, ski about 500 feet downhill, then walk a couple hundred feet to the gondola. Most runs are higher up the mountain, so you probably won’t use that gondola again during the day. To return, ski run #21 almost to the bottom, which gets you within about 300 feet of the pension on the other side of the road. If that run is too difficult, you can ride the gondola down. Ski rentals and service are available at its base.

You can ski in and out, and the gondola is right there. It’s about a 100 yard walk to Kitzbuhel’s charming, world famous village. The hotel is classic, clean, and has a great breakfast. The hosts come from an iconic ski family. Thanks, Guido!

The breakfasts were excellent, and Flokie the ginger cat kept us company each morning. Our host, Kerstin, was open, friendly, and always happy to help with everyday questions, including restaurant tips and which mountain trails were worth hiking. It was hard to leave. The rooms are simple and elegant, with comfortable beds, fairly spacious bathrooms, and balconies looking out over Kitzbuhel and the surrounding peaks. The whole place has a lovely atmosphere, thanks in part to its 60s and 70s style and the photographs and trophies from the successful skiing years of Olympic medalist Ernst Hinterseer.

The hosts gave us the corner room, which felt quite special. It had beautiful views, and the rooms were spacious. Breakfast was fresh, and all the breads were wonderful, especially the croissants and pretzel rolls. Pension Hinterseer is a beautiful, well-run place to explore kitzbuhel from.

The rooms were warm, clean, and comfortable, and breakfast was good. There’s also a good sauna. From the boot room you can ski most of the way to the Hahnenkamm Bahn, and red run 21 brings you within 100 yards of the front door, even though the pension is up the hill. The train station is a 6 minute walk, and Innsbruck is an hour away by train. The host gave us a friendly welcome.
