Apart Matthias

The location made it so easy to get around: the train station is right next door, but it’s completely quiet since it’s at the end of the line. Bus stops for skiing and local trips are right there too. We parked our car and barely needed it, except for a short drive to the market because it was cold during our mid-January stay. Day trips to nearby towns, Innsbruck, and even the Munich airport were easy. Apart Matthias also has an in-room sauna, which was perfect after long days skiing, hiking, or shopping. The owner takes such pride in the place and goes out of her way for guests. At checkout, we received two small bottles of wine and a branded keepsake, such a thoughtful end to the visit. The apartment was excellent. There isn’t a separate living room, but the large kitchen made a great shared space. It had quality cookware and utensils, and we cooked two dinners and all our breakfasts there. The pantry included jellies, honey, salt, pepper, and sugar. Cooking oil would have been nice, but that’s a small detail. We loved the two balconies, one off the kitchen and one off a bedroom, both with amazing mountain views. Parking was never a problem. We sometimes wondered if a space would be free, but there was always at least one, a sign of how well the property is managed. The ski room is thoughtfully set up, with secure locked ski storage, boot warmers, and an easy spot to put boots on and take them off. The lobby has a little sitting area and an on-your-honor selection of snacks, drinks, and espresso pods for your room. There’s also a large stacked washer and dryer for evening use. It usually costs €10 per use including detergent, which seemed reasonable, and we were pleasantly surprised not to see the charge on our final bill. It made it easy to pack light and keep things fresh. We were welcomed with schnapps, which set the tone for the warm hospitality throughout. Next door, the restaurant and hotel bar is a traditional Austrian place and a fun spot for an evening, with darts and pool. The bakery and coffee shop next door was hands-down the best we tried in Europe. Just be aware they only take cash in euros and don’t speak English, which adds to the authentic charm. Apart Matthias was a highlight of our time in Austria. We can’t think of a better place to stay in Mayrhofen or the Zillertal Valley. We’d return without hesitation, and look forward to coming back with friends to stay at Apart Matthias in summer.
