The breakfast was fresh and amazing, and the place was clean and comfortable. For the price, it's great value, with welcoming hosts. It's clearly outside the city center. You can take a bus that only takes several minutes or walk a longer way. We did both and found them easy. Herbert’s place also has parking, a big plus if you've rented a car, since hotels in the center don't. Some unhappy reviewers seem to have expected luxury at half the price of most Salzburg hotels.
We were booked at HPH from 23 - 26/9/25, but left after just one night because we were so disappointed. The proprietor greeted us fairly warmly, though he was very critical that we hadn't filled out all the pre-arrival information on his website. The room was clean, but extremely basic: one soap dispenser in the bathroom and just two small towels. The advertised “large double bed” was two single mattresses pushed together, with poor quality, bobbly sheets that looked old. Our room faced the front, where road noise was considerable late at night and early in the morning, starting around 6am. Breakfast was a very basic continental offering. There was no fruit apart from a badly bruised, past-its-best apple, and only coffee because they'd run out of tea. The location also felt much farther from the center than it had seemed. There was only one nearby restaurant for dinner, and it wasn't great. We ate there on arrival because we had no other option that evening. I'd say avoid it. Pay a little more to stay in the center for a much more enjoyable experience. We moved there for the rest of our visit and thoroughly enjoyed Salzburg.
The property felt more like a hostel than a hotel: very clean, but extremely sparse. The only toiletries were a bottle of liquid hand soap. The double bed was two single mattresses held together by a sheet that was old and bobbly. Breakfast was very basic, though priced like it is at large hotels. The cereal bar amounted to one box of cornflakes, there was no fruit, and there wasn't even tea because they'd run out. On top of that, the property is on a main road without double glazing, so it was noisy all night. There was only one nearby place to eat, and it wasn't inspiring.
We spent three days in Salzburg in early August, and Hotel Pension Herbert made for an affordable, pleasant stay. Everything went smoothly, and the owner was friendly and very helpful.
Herbert was a real highlight, polite and friendly, and he gave us useful tips about Salzburg. He suggested the 24h Salzburg card, shared some historical context, and pointed out places locals enjoy that are less touristy and worth visiting, like Augustiner brewery. The room and bathroom were spacious, and the four windows give you an idea of the size. The beds were fine, and breakfast was good, with their own milk and croissants baked daily. We stayed two days to see the city and thought Pension Herbert was a great choice. It's not downtown, but arriving by car worked perfectly since we could park free at the pension and leave the car there. We tried both the roughly 30 minute walk through historic areas and the 5 bus line right beside the pension, which takes around 15 minutes downtown.
