Avoca Beach Hotel

We booked at the last minute, but the team made everything easy. The villas have a simple, current look, and their timber and brick fit beautifully with the surrounding nature. It’s a lovely spot in the middle of Avoca Beach. I’m already planning another retreat here, and would definitely recommend it.

Finding your room after dark is a real ordeal here. There’s barely any lighting or signage, and the roads and paths up to the rooms are incredibly steep. The parking area has no motion lights either. We struggled to work out where to go, and I couldn’t reach our room without help. If you have any mobility problems, this place is a no go. We watched other guests in their 4x4 slide on the hilly road and back into trees, with no lighting to help them find their way either. Getting to a room shouldn’t feel like an orienteering challenge. The rooms are very basic. Ours had no lamps or mirrors, and there wasn’t even soap in the downstairs bathroom. There were spider webs everywhere. The deck had one old, broken table but no chairs, and there wasn’t enough crockery for the guests. After checking in, we stood on the balcony with no seating and saw the same trouble other guests were having. The reviews seem misleading because they’re combined with the restaurant reviews. If this is the kind of stay you want, clamping would be better. Save yourself the drama, and your marriage, and go somewhere else.

We popped in on a whim for lunch on the way to the beach. The food was amazing, especially the fish and chips, which I’d highly recommend. Lovely atmosphere too, and Terry the lizard came by for a visit!

Work has brought me back to The Avoca Beach Hotel several times, and the rooms have been spotless and nicely presented on every visit. The Bistro meals have always been exceptional. Last time I had an amazing steak, maybe the best I can remember. Looking forward to returning for another comfy bed and a great meal.
