I’ve stayed here four times over the past seven years while visiting friends, and each visit has been nice. The rooms have always been clean, and the shared showers and toilets are decent. Since it’s part of a pub and bar, some young people sometimes come in late and drunk to sleep. Earplugs are a good idea.

Friendly staff and patrons made the Eastern feel authentic, with a warmth you can’t fake. On a cool Ballarat spring day, the open fires added to that feeling from the moment I walked in. It has only recently reopened, yet keeps the charm you hope for in a historic hotel. Old buildings offer more than a facade: they’re part of our history, and this one is at its best serving the purpose it was designed for. I hope the new management has a long, successful run at the Eastern Hotel.

The rooms themselves are fine, but I’m not comfortable with the facilities. Three of the four shower doors have gaps where other guests could look in if they wanted to. The remaining shower has a glass window that blurs the view. I wouldn’t recommend this place to solo female travellers.

Self check-in was smooth, and the beer garden is a nice extra. It suits my solo travelling artist vibe: good atmosphere and affordable accommodation. The beer felt a little pricey, so a happy hour would be welcome. I’m looking forward to the live music. Might not be everyone’s cup of tea.

The rooms are small and lovely, and much nicer than I expected at this budget price. I even had electric blankets!
