Kooljaman Resort at Cape Leveque, Dampier Peninsula (Broome) is a really unique wilderness camp on a pristine stretch of coast. Sadly, it’s closed now. I hope the Aboriginal communities and park and wildlife authorities can work together to reopen the caravan park.

The beach is beautiful, the sunsets are great, and the whole place has a unique feel. We brought friends this time and they loved it too. The safari tents haven’t been renovated since I visited 12 years ago, so they’re looking a bit tired, but I’d still recommend the experience. There’s a great restaurant on site.

The beaches are gorgeous, and the sunsets make the drive from Broome worthwhile. We stayed three days in a safari tent and had a perfect time. Bring plenty of mosquito repellent, since the tents sit among untouched bushland and the bugs can be friendly. Reception gets very busy, so have your booking and payment details printed and with you. If you’re arriving by car, try to avoid the bus tour times.

For $5 per person you can walk down to the beaches and use the showers, BBQs, and other park facilities. The camping and day visitor facilities are well set up. The eastern beach is gorgeous, and I’d pay the extra fee to drive there. The cafe has great food, and there’s a little shop for essentials and souvenirs. Just be prepared for a long, steep walk down the boardwalk, especially in the heat, and it’s even farther if you want to see the red cliff at western beach.

We only had a short stop here as part of our Horizontal Falls tour, so we saw just one stretch of beach. The white sand and turquoise water were stunning, and the imposing red stone hills made the whole view impressive.
