Southport is much quieter than Surfers Paradise's busy nightlife, and the Woodroffe is tucked away on a backstreet. Cavill Avenue is about a 10-minute tram ride or a 25-minute walk away. Restaurants and Australia Fair shopping centre are within five minutes on foot, handy if you don't want to go out again at night. The hotel seemed quite new and modern, with the amenities you'd expect. I had a magnificent stay there a few years ago.

The G:link station is just a three-minute walk away, making it easy to get around the Gold Coast. The hotel suits anyone after a lively city feel, and my room was comfortable and well kept. There aren't sea views, but the convenient location made up for that. If you're carrying heavy bags, note there are a few steps from the street entrance to reception. A small lift for luggage makes that much easier.

The staff were very friendly, but the facilities could be improved. This doesn't feel like a four-star hotel. Breakfast isn't a buffet: there are about eight set options, and you choose one for them to prepare.

My favourite place to stay, and I loved being there. The rooms are well cared for and quite comfortable, the staff are friendly, and breakfast facilities are good. Security access is excellent, and Australia Fair is within walking distance. This has to be the best bolt-hole on the Gold Coast.

The building looks fresh and new, and the location is great, with shops and light rail nearby. There's some paid parking on-site. The room itself disappointed with its minimalist setup: no wardrobe, no lounge or eating area, and the air-conditioning temperature couldn't be adjusted. There was nothing provided for washing up. There's a cafe for breakfast, but no room service for food.
