The displays inside the old court house are especially good. A couple of video presentations are set up in a diorama so it looks as though the people on screen are using the objects in the display as props. It’s an engaging way to tell the stories. The old holding cells still have prisoners’ graffiti on the wooden walls, including some interesting and funny comments. The church is surprisingly large for a small, mostly transient population, and you can still ring the bell behind the altar. There are two old organs at the back that look in good condition, though visitors are asked not to touch them. Hartley is a beautifully preserved historic site west of the Blue Mountains, and was once a stop for people travelling from Sydney towards Jenolan Caves and Bathurst. Only the old court house and catholic church are open to visitors on self-guided tours. Tickets are very reasonably priced and well worth it. The visitor centre staff member we spoke with was friendly and knowledgeable, and we had a lovely chat and learned a lot about the village’s history. We visited on a quiet weekday, which made that easier. If you’re heading west from Sydney, it’s worth allowing an hour or two to take in this glimpse of the past.

The old court building is a highlight, especially the cells with prisoners’ graffiti. Hartley is a fascinating example of a Blue Mountains village from the 1830s, with friendly, helpful staff and a well-presented site. The café in one of the old village properties serves great light lunches and cakes. Well worth a visit.

A nice café and a great antiques store make this a worthwhile stop. There’s a slice of history here, including the court house, and the people are very friendly.

The Talisman workshop and gallery are well worth seeing, with lots of amazing handmade pieces. We spent just over an hour there, including a short walk to the river and granite rock, and it wasn’t very busy on a weekend morning. This is a historic village that’s been around for more than 150 years. Go to visitor reception to buy a ticket, $8.80 for adults, which gives access to the heritage court house and church. Reception also provides the code for the digital lock.

We walked around the buildings, then visited the antiques store and gallery. The store had some lovely unusual things, and the gallery was incredible, full of beautiful unique work by very talented people. There was beautiful Aboriginal art in the visitor centre too. Everyone was lovely, and the public toilets were a bonus, so clean. A beautiful little historic stop, highly recommend.
