A mate and I had a terrific stay at Arajilla for nearly a week. The resort layout was lovely, and the rooms were well equipped and appointed. They supplied bikes and helmets, plus snorkelling gear, backpacks, and both rain and beach umbrellas. Staff from James to Irene and Diesel were great and incredibly helpful. They drove us to dinner venues and provided lovely food for us to cook, either in the well equipped kitchen or on the resort’s nice BBQ facilities. I’d recommend Arajilla for a terrific Lord Howe Island holiday.

Arajilla sits in a fabulous location and is a beautiful retreat, and we did love it. But people should know what the current experience is like. Earlier reviews mention wonderful dinners and happy hours, but those are now non existent, so it’s basically self catering. The lovely central area goes unused and shuts most nights around 6 or 7, which leaves the resort feeling rather soulless. I wanted visitors to know about these issues before deciding what to expect.

As a local, I was proud to see my friends from British Columbia, Canada enjoy Lord Howe Island at its best. They stayed at this retreat recently, and the calm, secluded feeling was special, with Kentia palms and ancient banyan trees all around. The location worked beautifully: within minutes they could be barefoot on the beach or setting off on one of the island’s world-class hiking trails. Boardwalks wind through the gardens, and after a day out we could relax together over incredible dining and exceptional Australia wines. Their rooms were immaculate, spacious, and beautifully styled, with a luxurious but comfortable resort-chic feel. The bathrooms had spacious layouts and incredible showers. The rooms opened onto that distinctive Lord Howe Island landscape, as if the rainforest wrapped around the property. What I noticed most, even as a local, was how easy the place felt. The staff were welcoming and attentive, ready to help without hovering. The whole stay had beauty, comfort, and genuine island hospitality.

A great spot to switch off, tucked away at one end of the island with a beach right on the doorstep. The shops are easy to reach on foot or by bike for a drink, food, coffee, or supplies from the pantry to make something in your room. I’d definitely return. A few picky points: the rooms are comfortable, but not soundproof or independent, and footsteps from others can break the otherwise quiet atmosphere. Some of the ground staff could be friendlier too, even just a smile when passing or saying hello. I also found it just over the “too expensive” mark for what it is, though I understand the challenge of keeping everything clean and in good order in such a remote place.

I stayed in a Kentia Suite and highly recommend it for the design, including the skylights and everything being on one level. The retreat is at the north end of Lagoon Road, close to uncrowded, pristine Old Settlement Beach. Island shops, the museum, and post office aren't far away. On a small, remote island, hotel service is useful, so I’d choose this over a high end rental.
