The room seemed freshly updated, but it still had that lovely classic feel. I slept better than I can remember, with soft sheets and pillows and a really quiet, calm room. The staff were helpful and accommodating, and the concierge was especially kind. A lovely gentleman on the morning of January 1st looked after our bags while we waited to check in early. I also loved the traditional Christmas display in the foyer, with its decorated tree and all the poinsettias. We only stayed one night and already didn't want to leave. I hope this historic Melbourne building is protected and never developed or altered. Reading about its history and the repeated attempts to demolish part of it and build anew made me anxious and upset. The ghosts of yesteryear will surely protect this place, and haunt it too, I know it!

The food was a real treat, from the warm savoury pastries and sandwiches to the fruit sweets and scones. Since we went on a weekend, there was an extra dessert bar too. We enjoyed a good choice of tea, coffee, chocolate, wine and cocktails. We booked afternoon tea for our anniversary, and it had been on my bucket list for ages. It lived up to its reputation and made for a delightful afternoon. Arranging the gluten-free option was easy, and I never felt I was missing out compared with the regular menu.

I left very disappointed, and I definitely won't be back. I stayed at The Windsor Hotel years ago, so it was sad to see how much the condition and staff professionalism seem to have slipped. This did not feel like a five-star hotel or experience. At breakfast, with only about eight tables occupied, we ordered black tea and toast, eggs Benedict and orange juice. I'm still waiting for the juice. When we left, it took 20 minutes to get our car. We could have called ahead if someone had warned us at check-in that it would take so long. There were mould spots in the silicone around the bath, too. The arrival and check-in were poor as well. The doorman was busy chatting with a friend over coffee and didn't acknowledge us; his clothes looked sloppy and unprofessional. At the front desk, we arrived around 2 and were told the room wouldn't be ready until 3. We were told there was nowhere to sit and relax or have tea, and nobody knew where we could get a cup nearby. At least 6-10 people who arrived after us had rooms available. Once ours was ready, we waited for our bags upstairs until I finally called to ask for them. From the doorman and concierge to the front desk, staff seemed unhelpful and uninformed.

Breakfast at the restaurant was lovely, and the Sunday evening Concierge was very helpful. His service couldn't be faulted. I still love the hotel's location and ambience, but I won't stay there again. My latest visit, booked for Sunday, March 1st 2026, was below standard after many previous stays at Hotel Windsor. Reception let the phone ring out twice when we called on arrival about valet parking, and the staff were quite rude when we eventually checked in. Our twin room was noisy, the beds were hard and lumpy, and the air conditioner made a lot of noise too. There was no bottled water, and we had just two bath towels, one each. An extra one for wet hair would have been nice.

The food was delicious, and there was plenty of it. I brought my 82-year-old mother for high tea, and we had a really memorable afternoon. At the door, a delightful French man greeted us, chatted with us and showed us to our table. Our waiter Brendan looked after us for the rest of the afternoon and was wonderful. Thank you for such lovely staff, service and food.
